Paul’s Master’s thesis works the original theme first heard in the English horn as if trying to emerge from a fog of repetitive motifs and rapid flurries of descending arpeggios, and then arrives with full force in the horns who refuse to allow the distracting notes , ostinato counterpoint and finally emerges in Rhythmic Augmentation as the second theme heard in the strings, . This is a work as diverse in color as it is intense in complex harmonies and frenetic passages.
Unfortunately with the many moves Paul has been making in the last 20 some years, the complete recording of this piece is still to be found. What you hear in this recording is the first half of the symphony.
